• Set a goal. There is no way that you are going to achieve your fitness results if you don't have a clear goal in place. As I mentioned above, decide if you want to become healthier, improve your cardiovascular health, run 3 miles without stopping, or just have more energy every day.

• Get a buddy. Even if it is only your dog, having a friend or companion to exercise with you will help greatly. Try to enlist your best friend, husband, sister, or even join a walking group so that you won't have an excuse to hit the snooze button when you really need to get up and exercise!

• Use music. One of the greatest motivators in exercise is music, and you can use a new iPod, new playlist, or new app on your iPhone to reward yourself with music that will keep you going. Choose songs that are upbeat that you love so that you can have something to focus on besides how much you are sweating on the treadmill...

• Mix it up. You don't have to do anything that you don't like, so try to explore your alternatives when it comes exercise. Maybe you would prefer to swim laps, play tennis, do yoga, or lift weights. Mixing it up will keep you interested, and it also will provide an added benefit to your body by preventing you from hitting a fitness plateau.

• Ease into exercise. If you are new to exercise, there is no reason to tire yourself out on the first day. You can start out by running or walking 20 minutes per day, three days a week. After that, you can add weights, increase your running or walking time, and work steadily to achieve your goal, little by little.

• Reward yourself. Of course, you don't want to reward yourself with food or snacks since you are trying to lose weight and get in shape, but other rewards will definitely keep you motivated to meet your exercise goals! As an example, you may want to get yourself a pedicure after you have been working out for two months consecutively, or you can even save $10 per week that you workout to buy a new outfit. That is motivation in itself!
